According to Amy Chua, law professor of Yale University, stern Chinese moms raise more-successful children than coddling Western moms. Does such strict disciplined parenting style of Chinese moms really raise successful kids, or does it damage them psychologically?
Amy Chua believes that strict parenting can raise better kids. Chinese moms can do things that would seem impossible — even legally unjust — to Western moms.
Chinese moms may say to their daughters, "Hey fatty — lose few pounds." On contrary, Western parents may have to tiptoe around the issue. Western moms are more concerned about their child's psyches. Chinese moms aren't. Chinese mothers behave very differently as compared to Western moms. They prohibit their kids from watching TV, having play dates, attending sleepovers, or selecting their own extracurricular activities. While such type of parenting approach may raise successful kids but what about the kids' happiness in all those years? And most of the times, kids with such type of parents grow up to hate them.
In a study, it has been revealed that almost 70% of the Western moms believed that emphasizing academic success is not good for children while 0% of Chinese moms felt that their kids can be “the best” students and that “academic achievement reflects successful parenting”. Chinese moms felt that if a child does not excel at school then there is a high possibility that the parents are not doing their job properly.
The bottom line is that it is very early to know "what fruit all those years of strict 'Chinese' alpha parenting" will truly bear.
